ESOS: Workshop on Energy Audits and Energy Management Systems

Course Objectives

Workshop on Energy Audits and Energy Management Systems under Article 8 of the Energy Efficiency Directive Presentation of Article 8

The Energy Efficiency Directive 2012, establishes a set of binding measures to enable the EU to reach its energy efficiency target of 20% by 2020. Under the Directive, all EU countries are required to use energy more efficiently at all stages of the energy chain.

EU countries were required to transpose the Directive's provisions into their national laws by 5 June 2014.

In the UK this took the form of ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme Regulations 2014), which came into force 17 July 2014.

Participation in ESOS is mandatory for any large undertaking with carries out business activity within the UK and which meets any one of the following criteria:

  1. It has 250 or more staff;
  2. It has fewer than 250 staff but has an annual turnover exceeding 50 million euro (38,937,777) and a balance sheet exceeding 43 million euro (33,486,489)
  3. It is part of a corporate group which includes a large undertaking (as defined by (1) or (2), above).

Participants may work in any industry including, for example, joint ventures, partnerships and charitable organisations (providing they are an undertaking).

The scheme will not apply to public bodies. Undertakings that qualify for ESOS on 31 December 2014 (i.e. met any one of the three criteria noted above) will need to participate in the scheme, with notification to the scheme administrator (Environmental Agency) of compliance required by 5 December 2015. Failure to demonstrate compliance by this date may result in significant financial penalties be imposed on the undertaking. This workshop helps qualifying undertakings understand the options available to them to demonstrate compliance, as well as describe the key components of Energy Audits.

If you still aren%u2019t sure whether you have to comply with ESOS you can call a member of the Cosensa EMS team on 0845 602 6192 / 02890 439624 or email
